I was instantly attracted to the Atlanta Community ToolBank, and now ToolBank USA, by their ability to build social capital. I am convinced that a nonprofit that provides the literal tools for other non-profits and community-related organizations to achieve their missions is essential for mature community development. I am fortunate to witness the impact of the ToolBank program first-hand.

The ToolBank model fills a critical need that ensures that nonprofits in our communities have access to the tools, equipment, and supplies required to execute a broad range of projects. With the launch of Toolbank USA, the organization will enable partners by bringing resources and proven supply chain management and tool repair processes, to enable community projects across the domestic US.

The strength of the ToolBank model is derived from the commitment to collaboration. The ToolBank only succeeds by helping other organizations succeed, and that fosters a tremendous sense of interagency trust and communication. In this way, ToolBank USA seeks partners around the country with a shared interest in putting the community first. I am honored to play a role in this project.

Having been involved with a number of nonprofits, what separates the ToolBank for me is that it not only provides a much-needed service to the community, but also provides a way for volunteers to be involved in providing that service. Since I’ve been a member of the Atlanta ToolBank board, I’ve been extremely impressed with the very practical need this organization provides to the Atlanta community. The Toolbank is a nonprofit with tangible purpose that allows its volunteers to see the change that they are actually bringing to the community. National expansion is only the logical next step for the ToolBank model.

I joined board of the Atlanta Community ToolBank in 2002 after volunteering for an awe-inspiring ToolBank fundraiser. After spending several years in the nonprofit sector, I know how unique and important the ToolBank is in the Atlanta community. I am continually fascinated by its impact and simplicity, and its focus on collaboration. Now is the right time to bring this innovative nonprofit to other cities.

For years, I have witnessed first-hand the benefits the Atlanta Community ToolBank brings to nonprofits, schools, churches and volunteer organizations in the Atlanta community. The ToolBank model allows financial resources to stretch farther and make a greater impact while also influencing a positive environmental effect by keeping excess tools and supplies out of the waste stream. I joined the board of ToolBank USA because I believe any city can benefit from a ToolBank which allows community organizations to serve more people with fewer resources – something desperately needed in difficult economic times. I believe that ToolBanks will soon be as common in every city as food pantries and after-school programs, and they will be just a vital to healthy community.
