Atlanta, GA — January 10, 2025 — ToolBank USA is excited to announce the appointment of Trey Bearden as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Patty Russart, who has led the organization since May 2018. Trey, who most recently served as the Chief Program Officer for ToolBank USA and previously as the founding Executive Director for the Richmond ToolBank, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for community-driven change to his new role.
Trey embarked on his journey with ToolBank USA in 2018 as the Chief Program Officer, significantly influencing the organization’s national initiatives. A key aspect of his work involved expanding ToolBank USA’s affiliate network by introducing new ToolBanks in Birmingham, transforming New Orleans into a Community ToolBank, and preparing for the opening of the Detroit ToolBank, all while enhancing our Disaster Services program.
The Disaster Services Program is vital for providing essential tools for recovery after natural disasters. Under Trey’s guidance, the program experienced remarkable growth from two locations to eight, while also deploying staff and trailers of various sizes filled with tools to community organizations and their volunteers—at no cost—to support disaster response and recovery efforts nationwide.
“Expanding our network of ToolBanks and our disaster response efforts are the most powerful methods for uplifting communities in need,” said Bearden. “We take pride in the growth of our network and ToolBank Disaster Services program, and I am deeply committed to expanding our reach and effectiveness by empowering communities to improve, rebuild, and recover—whether during times of disaster or in everyday life. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every community, no matter the challenges they face, has the resources and support needed to become stronger and more resilient.”
As the founding Executive Director of the Richmond Community ToolBank, Trey learned firsthand the value of building relational capital and taking action. His role in Richmond reinforced his belief that “action creates clarity” and that “the answer is always no unless you ask;” principles that will guide his leadership at ToolBank USA.
“I am excited and honored to take on the role of CEO,” said Bearden. “We have incredible potential to expand ToolBank USA’s impact, and I look forward to building on Patty’s success, to further our mission of supporting communities across the nation.”
Trey’s leadership philosophy is simple: “The right tool for the job.” He believes in finding effective and practical solutions to challenges, both organizational and community-driven, and he is committed to ensuring that ToolBank USA continues to serve as a vital resource for nonprofit organizations, schools, and volunteers.
Patty Russart, who has served as the CEO of ToolBank USA since 2018, is stepping down after an extraordinary tenure. During her time as CEO, Patty led ToolBank USA’s efforts to build stronger partnerships and significantly grow its impact. As the Executive Director of the Atlanta Community ToolBank (ACTB) since 2008, Patty successfully completed a $1.525 million Capital Campaign, which allowed ACTB to purchase a larger warehouse and create a Tool Training Center. Patty’s mantra, “Where there is a will, there is a way,” fueled her successful fundraising efforts and dedication to the mission.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at ToolBank USA and am so proud of all we’ve accomplished,” said Russart. “Trey is an exceptional leader, and I am confident ToolBank USA is in great hands as he takes the reins. His vision and experience will guide the organization to even greater success in the future.”
Patty’s favorite tool, the Nifty Nabber, reflects her pragmatic approach to leadership. She is always ready to reach for the right tool to get the job done.
With Trey Bearden at the helm, ToolBank USA is poised to continue expanding its impact and furthering its mission of providing tools and resources to support community organizations and volunteers nationwide.
