TOOLBANK NETWORK REPLICATION EFFORTS:
Tools That Change Communities
At ToolBank USA, growth isn’t just about expanding our footprint—it’s about deepening our impact in communities across the country. As we continue to replicate the ToolBank model in cities like Detroit, New Orleans, and Birmingham, our mission remains clear: equip nonprofits and their volunteers with the tools they need to build, serve, and recover—without barriers. From forming local boards and securing warehouse space to onboarding passionate executive leadership, our network is gaining powerful momentum. Here’s a look at the latest updates from across the ToolBank network as we continue to bring our mission to life in more communities nationwide.
Great! Below is a suggested narrative structure that transforms the bullet point updates into engaging, business-casual blog content. Each section is tailored to highlight progress, local leadership, and next steps in a way that aligns with ToolBank USA’s mission and tone:
Detroit ToolBank: Building the Foundation
Momentum is growing in Detroit as efforts to establish the city’s newest ToolBank continue to take shape. A dedicated board is now in place, led by President Aaron Cowell (U.S. Engineering Innovations), Vice President Trey Bearden (ToolBank USA), and Secretary Nando Felten (Building Successful Bridges). With articles of incorporation and bylaws filed with the Secretary of State, the team is eagerly awaiting official confirmation to move forward.
In the meantime, a potential Executive Director has been offered the position, and site visits are underway with real estate partners to find the right warehouse space. Once incorporation is finalized, the focus will shift to key operational tasks such as securing an EIN, expanding the board, and acquiring tools to build out the start-up inventory.
New Orleans ToolBank: Building on Momentum
New Orleans continues to make strides as it welcomes its own ToolBank chapter. Officially registered with the Secretary of State as of April 9, 2025, the New Orleans ToolBank has also secured its EIN and is preparing to be included under ToolBank USA’s group exemption with the IRS.
Led by an accomplished board—President John B. Trainor, Jr. (Hancock Whitney Bank), Vice President Dr. Shondra Williams (Inclusive Care), and Secretary Johana Reyes Zeno (Grainger Mexico)—the team is now focused on growing its board and expanding its footprint. Plans are underway to enlarge warehouse space in partnership with Rebuilding Together NOLA, with tool procurement and operational setup next on the checklist.
Magic City ToolBank (Birmingham): Gaining Traction
In Birmingham, the Magic City ToolBank is making its presence felt. Operating temporarily out of a warehouse, the team is on track to move into a permanent space by June. Their board includes a mix of ToolBank USA leadership and local advocates, including President Max Michael, Vice President and Treasurer Matt Walenciak (ToolBank USA), and Secretary Trey Bearden. Local leaders Carole Clarke (City Council District 8) and Bonderia Lyons (BUN) are also on board, with additional board recruitment underway.
The Magic City team is ramping up tool lending and member agency engagement, with plans for a soft opening for city officials in June and a grand opening to follow.
Celebrating Milestones and Sustainability Efforts
As the network grows, so does our impact. We recently added the 1,000th tool type to the ToolBank Online Management (TOM) system—the DEWALT TOUGHSERIES™ Construction Jack—marking another milestone in our commitment to meet the diverse needs of our members. A generous donation of 15 generators from Generac is being split between New Orleans and Magic City ToolBanks to help power early operations and disaster response capabilities.
Spotlight: Houston ToolBank’s Expanding Impact
Celebrating over a decade of service, the Houston ToolBank continues to set a high bar for what ToolBank affiliates can achieve. With a staff of seven and a 9,000 sq ft warehouse, Houston is a powerhouse of community support. In 2024 alone, they lent out over $3.5 million worth of tools, equipping nearly 69,000 volunteers across more than 2,200 projects.
Their innovative approach includes Neighborhood Tool Hubs—secure, 24/7 tool pick-up sites in six locations—and a robust direct delivery program that brings tools directly to project sites. Houston is also leading the way in skills training through Tool School, which has already equipped over 150 individuals with the confidence and knowledge to use tools safely and effectively.
Welcoming New Leaders to the Network
Strong leadership is the key to sustainable growth, and we’re thrilled to welcome two new Executive Directors to the ToolBank family. Jessica Pohto joined the Windy City ToolBank in late February, while Elliot Weidow stepped into leadership at the Baltimore ToolBank in April. Their experience and passion will be vital in advancing our mission at the local level.
Honoring Years of Service
Two incredible ToolBank team members are celebrating major milestones this year. CJ Clark marks 20 years of service at our Atlanta ToolBank, and Maureen Krueger celebrates her 10-year anniversary as Executive Director at the Charlotte ToolBank. Their dedication and impact on the ToolBank network are immeasurable!
